Science of Reading (SoR) Micro-Credential

Science of Reading (SoR) Micro-Credential

Randall University has developed a micro-credential for current or future educators who seek to implement evidence-based literacy instruction grounded in the Science of Reading. Students will gain practical skills in supporting all learners through structured literacy approaches, including the ability to develop, modify, and implement strategies designed to aid students in acquiring foundational reading skills, phonemic awareness, decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, as well as additional elements such as pedagogical approaches, reading motivation, executive functioning, and flexible strategy use. This micro-credential meets the requirements of Senate Bill 362 (Strong Readers Act).

The Curriculum

The Science of Reading (SoR) micro-credential curriculum builds on knowledge and skills in planning research-based, systematic instruction in phonemic awareness, decoding, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing, while also introducing additional elements such as pedagogical approaches, reading motivation, executive functioning, and flexible strategy use.

This micro-credential is awarded after completion of EDEL 3123 Literacy in Primary Grades (3 hours) and EDEL 3223 Literacy in Intermediate Grades. These courses are required for all elementary, early childhood, and special education majors.

  • Courses are currently taught synchronously in 8-week sections online in the fall and spring semesters.
